THERMAL POWER PLANT

Part of Cape Verde’s ongoing investment plans to enhance energy generating capacity, reliability, and efficiency is the ORET project. Fogo Island relied on old diesel generators for electricity supply, which resulted not only in high operation costs and emissions but also in non-reliable energy supply for its people, industries, and tourism.

Our Solution

WinPower designed and built a new power plant with 2x 1,6 MW Gensets, operating at Diesel/HFO with highly efficient MAN Engines and recovery boilers, and prepared for an extension of 2x more Gensets.

It was equipped with a Siemens SCADA System and remote access for 24/7 technical advisory support, complete with a 20 kV substation with earthing reactance and shunt reactors for power factor compensation.

The control system was prepared for load demand / baseload and load sharing, operating as base power plant to the island, ensuring:

  1. Grid stability (frequency and voltage regulation)
  2. Spinning reserve
  3. Peak load demand, allowing the reliable integration of renewable energy systems in the 20 kV network.

Our O&M services, including remote technical advisory and major overhauls (with service engineers and spare parts supply), are a long-term commitment to our client needs and requirements.

The Results

From design to engineering and O&M Services, including technical support, WinPower delivered a turnkey solution for a new power plant. System capacity was enhanced in a total of 3,2 MW, reliability was ensured with no blackouts, and the efficiency of local energy supply was improved, resulting in customers savings per kWh.
