The new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on Boa Vista Island was inaugurated on 21 February by Cabeólica, S.A., marking the final milestone of a landmark energy storage programme in Cabo Verde.
With a capacity of 6 MW / 6 MWh, the Boa Vista BESS strengthens the stability and flexibility of the island’s power grid, while enabling greater integration of renewable energy and contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy model.
The inauguration brought together representatives of the Government of Cabo Verde, institutional partners and national stakeholders, reflecting the strategic importance of this infrastructure for the country’s energy future.
This project is part of a broader battery energy storage programme with a total capacity of 26 MW / 26 MWh, deployed across multiple islands in Cabo Verde. Together, these systems play a key role in reinforcing grid stability, increasing renewable energy penetration and supporting the transition towards a more efficient and resilient national power system.
As EPC contractor, WinPower, S.A. was responsible for the engineering, procurement and construction of these systems, ensuring their integration with existing infrastructure and compliance with high operational and safety standards.
The Boa Vista BESS represents another important step in the continued modernisation of Cabo Verde’s energy infrastructure, demonstrating the role of storage technologies in supporting power system stability, flexibility and renewable integration, particularly in island contexts.
WinPower congratulates Cabeólica and all partners involved in this important achievement and is proud to contribute to the continued evolution of the energy system in Cabo Verde.
