The results of the first electronic auction for the centralized purchase of biomethane and green hydrogen in Portugal, held on January 23, 2025, hav been announced.
In this inaugural national auction, our Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) – WINPTX and WP2X – emerged as the biggest winners, securing approximately 40% of the total awarded volume. This result positions WinPower, S.A. as the national company with the largest awarded capacity and market share, reinforcing its role in the country’s energy transition.
WINPTX will produce green hydrogen for the injection of 30,000 MWh/year into the national transport grid.
WP2X will produce 17,500 MWh/year for injection into the distribution grid.
This auction, approved in 2022 and and launched last year by the current Minister of Environment, was anticipated as a crucial step to boost the emerging renewable gases sector and support national decarbonisation efforts. The goal is to promote the centralized purchase of hydrogen produced by water electrolysis using electricity generated from renewable sources for injection into the natural gas transport and distribution grids. The results were announced on February 12, after more than half of the applications were excluded in October.
Besides reaching this significant stepping stone in volume, we have reached a rare milestone in Portugal: we have created the necessary conditions to make these projects economically viable and to move forward with the Final Investment Decision (FID). This means we are one step closer to making renewable hydrogen a reality, directly impacting the national energy sector.
With these results, WinPower, S.A. is shaping a new path for the development of the renewable gases sector in Portugal, driving innovation, competitiveness, and economic decarbonisation.
We extend our gratitude to all who made these achievements possible and remain committed to the future of energy.
